October 2nd, 2017, Jackson, WY - One of the goals listed in the Community Health Improvement Plan, created from the Healthy Teton County 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment, is to ensure adults 65+ have access to influenza and pneumococcal vaccines.

To make receiving your flu shot as easy as possible, Teton County Public Health will be hosting an Adult 65+ Focused Flu Clinic at the Senior Center on Friday, October 6th, 2017 from 11am-1pm and Friday, October 20th from 12:30pm-2pm.  High dose flu shots will be available for individuals who are 65 years old and over, while the quadrivalent flu shot (which consists of 4 strains of the influenza virus) will be available for individuals who are under 65 years of age or individuals who choose not to receive the high dose flu shot.  Teton County Public Health can bill Medicare and other insurances for the cost of either type of flu shot. Please bring your Medicare card, insurance card, and/or your supplemental insurance card with you to ensure accurate billing occurs.

Additionally, the CDC is also recommending the Prevnar vaccine for all of those over 65 years of age. This vaccine protects against thirteen types of pneumonia and is given in addition to the pneumonia vaccine you may have already received when you turned 65. Again, Medicare will cover the cost of this vaccine. Teton County Public Health will also be providing this vaccine during the flu shot clinic on October 6th and October 20th. If you would like to also receive the Prevnar vaccine during this time you must check with your doctor to see:

1) if you may have already received this vaccine, and

2) the date you received the previous pneumococcal vaccine.

This information is crucial because Medicare will only cover the cost of the Prevnar vaccine once, and because the two different types of pneumonia vaccine require specific spacing between one another. If you have any questions about a vaccine prior to the clinic please call Teton County Public Health at 733-6401. There will be a nurse available during the Adult 65+ Focused Flu Clinic to help answer your questions. Unfortunately, we will not be able to validate prior vaccination dates during the clinic. We encourage you to check with your doctor and/or pharmacist beforehand to determine if you may have already received the Prevnar vaccine and/or when you received the previous pneumonia vaccine. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Senior Flu Clinic.
