Winter Operations

Winter in Teton County brings a wide range of maintenance responsibilities, recreation access, and seasonal service adjustments, and our Winter Operations page is designed to help you understand what to expect throughout the season. Here you’ll find detailed information on grooming operations, pathway and sidewalk clearing, outdoor ice rinks, winter park access, and regional closure resources, along with links to real-time trail updates and partner agencies.

For a clear overview of how we prioritize winter maintenance across Parks and Recreation facilities and pathways, please review Understanding Winter Service Levels in Teton County (PDF), which outlines our tiered service levels for winter operations.

Grooming

The Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department (TCJPR) seasonal grooming occurs generally from December 15th to March 15th each year when snow depths around the valley and drainages are sufficient to utilize the Department’s new 2024 PistenBully PB100. Staff will utilize a snowmobile and pull behind groomer at times during the early season until adequate snow depths are reached. Staff currently grooms Tuesday through Saturday with the assistance of Bushong Property Services on Mondays up Cache Creek to Noker Draw. Grooming is made possible through TCJPR operational funds, Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites & Trails RTP Grant, and TCSD#1 Rec District Grant in collaboration with Teton County Community Pathways, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, JH Nordic Alliance, JH Friends of Pathways, and Teton Valley Trails and Pathways.

TCJPR is responsible for grooming, out and back or looped, 68.5 miles of trails and pathways weekly in the Town of Jackson and Teton County.

We are excited to have all winter grooming information for the region located in one place, provided in partnership with the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance.

Teton Valley Trails and Pathways (TVTAP) is the primary groomer in Teton Valley, Idaho, with grooming information included in the JH Nordic Alliance Trail Grooming Schedules

Clearing Pathways

Pathways and Sidewalk Clearing

  • There is a total of 62.4 miles of pathways in Jackson Hole, including 15.4 miles in Grand Teton National Park.  Teton County Jackson Parks and Recreation (TCJPR) maintains 47 miles of Pathways in the summertime.
  • During the winter, TCJPR clears 26 miles of pathways and 23 miles of sidewalks and pathway connectors for commuter and/or recreational access.  An additional 5 miles of pathways are groomed by TCJPR (South Park Loop Road) and the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (Highway 390 from Lake Creek to the Mountain Resort)
  • Pathway and Sidewalk clearing maps can be found on the Teton County GIS Website.

Ice Rinks

Each winter, Teton County/Jackson Parks & Recreation maintains three outdoor community ice rinks—Owen Bircher Park in Wilson, the Fairgrounds Rink in Jackson, and the Alta Park Rink in Teton Valley. These rinks typically operate from early December through mid-March and are free for public use, offering a classic winter recreation experience for skaters of all ages and abilities. Morning maintenance keeps the ice in good condition throughout the season, while a mix of open skate, family skate hours, pickup hockey, and youth programs creates something for everyone.

Some rinks allow reservations for private events or group use, and certain times are designated for specific activities, such as pickup hockey or learn-to-skate sessions. Because these are outdoor rinks, conditions depend on weather, and schedules may shift based on programming or maintenance needs.

For full rink details—including hours, reservation procedures, rules and guidelines, and rink-specific calendars—please visit our Outdoor Ice Rinks page.

Winter Closures

Developed Parks within Teton County are open to public access throughout the winter, although facilities are not available. TCJPR respectfully requests that users adhere to a “pack it in-pack it out” approach to Park utilization. Reminding the public that Parks within the Town of Jackson city limits are subject to all laws and ordinances, regardless of the time of year, including No Dogs in Parks, Open fires, and Public Intoxication.

Numerous areas around Teton County are closed during the winter to support wildlife migration and minimize negative wildlife interactions. As land stewards for Teton County, the P&R Department supports these closures and provides the following information for the Public to access in order to identify areas for recreation during the winter months.
