Candidates filing for office by Independent Petition will be required to obtain signatures of not less than 2% of registered electors that cast votes for representative in congress in the last General Election.
233 registered elector signatures are required for a successful independent candidate petition for the 2020 General Election.
Petitions must be approved by the appropriate filing office prior to circulation.

Petitions can be circulated for signatures only during the calendar year in which the election for the office sought is to be held.
Petitions shall be filed no less than 70 days before a general election with the County Clerk (local candidates) or the Secretary of State (statewide candidate). Petitions must be accompanied by a $25.00 filing fee when submitted to the County Clerk’s office.
The Secretary of State or County Clerk shall determine from the official list of registered electors whether sufficient valid signatures have been obtained.
