Teton County is committed to reducing light pollution in our community. Per DarkSky International - "Light pollution is the human-made alteration of outdoor light levels from those occurring naturally. Light pollution disrupts wildlife, impacts human health, wastes money and energy, contributes to climate change, and blocks our view of the universe."
Teton County achieved this certification alongside the Town of Jackson, parallel to the efforts of Jackson Hole Airport and with the assistance of Wyoming Stargazing. As part of the certification process, Teton County pledged to convert all existing exterior fixtures owned or managed by the County to meet Dark Sky standards by 2030, and to have all future installed lighting meet IDSC standards as well.
Prior to certification, Teton County adopted exterior lighting standards for public and private buildings in line with DarkSky International's guidelines. Those guidelines can can seen by clicking here.
You can track Teton County's schedule and progress towards compliance with DarkSky International's standards on our GIS map of lighting fixtures by clicking here or on the browse the embedded map below. You can filter by responsible department and/or year at the top right corner of the map.
Interested businesses and property owners can register for Dark Sky Friendly Certification from Wyoming Stargazing. This is an independent program that is unaffiliated with Teton County Government, but is in the same spirit of the County's efforts to protect our night skies and is listed here as a public resource.
