Teton County, WY COVID-19 Vaccine Update: Authorization of Emergency Use for the First Updated COVID-19 Booster; Appointments Now Available
September 6, 2022, Jackson, WY – Late last week the FDA authorized the emergency use of an updated COVID-19 booster from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. Following this authorization the CDC endorsed the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendations for the use of this updated COVID-19 booster. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized as a single booster dose for individuals 12 and older, while the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized as a single dose booster for individuals 18 and older.
These updated boosters are designated as bivalent, because they target both the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus along with an Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 components. The addition of the Omicron component in the updated COVID-19 booster is expected to increase protection for individuals throughout the fall and winter while the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants are circulating and causing a majority of the COVID-19 cases in the United States.
Individuals are eligible for the updated COVID-19 booster if it has been two months since their most recent booster dose or since they have completed their primary series of the original COVID-19 vaccine. In order to receive the updated booster each person must have completed a primary series of a COVID-19 vaccine (two doses of either Pfizer or Moderna MRNA vaccines or one J & J vaccine).
The Teton County Health Department will be holding COVID-19 vaccine clinics at our office located at 460 E. Pearl Ave. for individuals 12 and older on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
To help accommodate the interest for the new updated COVID-19 booster, the Teton County Health Department will also hold a monthly Saturday clinic, the first being held on Saturday, September 24, 2022. These Saturday clinics will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole located at 1251 S. Park Loop Rd.
Appointments will be needed for all clinics and can be made by visiting http://www.tetoncountywy.gov/CovidVax. Individuals will not have the option to pick which type of vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) they receive due to our current allocation of the new updated COVID-19 booster. Individuals under 18 years of age will be given the Pfizer vaccine. Individuals will still be able to choose the type of vaccine for their primary series.
